Proposal for National Search for Director Shakes Up Monotony at Baton Rouge Airport

As Baton Rouge strives to continue to be a hub for movers and shakers, the airport is always a major talking point. Most recently, it was a no brainer that the city would not measure up in the Amazon search, due to lack of capacity of our airport. Many think you can’t start our growth plan as a city without an innovative plan of action for Baton Rouge Metro Airport.
In a recent Metro Council meeting, Councilwoman Barbara Freiberg, in conjunction with Cleve Dunn, Jr, Vice-Chair of the Airport Commission brought forward a measure that would create a committee for a national search for the airport director.
“We owe it to the citizens of BR, tax payers and frequent flyers to look for the best blueprint and plan out their to improve our airport. Many of us are forced to drive 45 minutes or more to New Orleans to get better flight cost and flight options. As frequent flyers, we should want to see what is out there to improve our airport,” said Dunn.
Last year, longtime chief of BTR Airport, Anthony Marino, resigned and Assistant Airport Director Ralph Hennessy has been filling Marino’s spot in the interim. Hennessy has been commended for the job he has done during the transition. The question currently looming is, can we do more to make BTR Airport attractive? Should the airport decision makers push the envelope?
It seems the monotony has already started to be shaken up. Shortly after the spark of  the ” let’s do more”  initiative, Commission Chairman, Andrew McCandless resigned, stating “I didn’t think I was very effective in my role as chairman.”
On October 11th, the Metro Council will have to decide on two opposing measures, Councilwoman Freiberg has proposing a resolution that would create a search committee for a new director, while Councilman Trae Welch, who has served on the airport commission for years, has filed a competing measure that would name Hennessy as permanent director.
What would you like to see happen at BR Airport?
