THE AVENUE: On Star Leaves A Mark On Baton Rouge

There is a new piece of art on the streets of Downtown BR. Local public artist, Jacob “J. Zumo” Zumo, in collaboration with New Orleans native Brandan “B. Mike” Odums were commissioned by OnStar to develop an image that spoke to the inspiration and resilience of Baton Rouge during the historic ” Great Flood” of 2016.
During our discussion, Zumo remembered the initial meeting between he and B. Mike, and how that conversation led to a wonderfully crafted mural in downtown Baton Rouge.

B. Mike, a New Orleans native, spoke to us about how this piece not only represents the coming together or two artists, but that it also represents the coming together of two cities. While explaining the vision behind the piece in relation to the historic flooding of 2005 and 2016, B. Mike stated, “We wanted to think about what that looked like visually….that’s when this image came up.”
The piece is featured on the wall of Hotel Indigo in Baton Rouge. Both artist were commissioned to work on this piece by OnStar during its #OnStarGivesBack campaign.
OnStar also called upon Baton Rouge-based Olympic hurdler LoLo Jones to commemorate the public art piece.
“I’m grateful to be partnering with OnStar to tell my story about the floods and the resilience of the city of Baton Rouge,” recalls LoLo Jones via her Facebook page.  “I’ve lived in Louisiana through hurricanes and floods. I’ve seen a lot of natural disasters that should’ve wiped Baton Rouge off the map. What I have seen over the years living here is this community always comes back stronger because people give back and help each other. “
