Baton Rouge Becomes First in the Nation to Orchestrate a Collaborative Community Health Needs Assessment

Healthy BR, Baton Rouge Mayor’s Healthy City Initiative, released the 2018 Community Health Needs Assessment and implementation plan during a press conference on Tuesday at Pennington Biomedical Research Center. Baton Rouge is the first city in the nation to orchestrate a work group where all of the hospitals collaboratively work to implement the plan built from the needs assessment. HealthyBR’s unique approach brings together more than 90 hospitals, non-profit organizations, local businesses, schools, and governmental institutions that collaborate to significantly impact our city’s health priorities.

A CHNA is a strategic plan evaluating the health of a community and a requirement of tax-exempt hospitals. The Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act (ACA), enacted on March 23, 2010 is the federal legislation that requires tax-exempt hospitals to create a CHNA every three years in order to preserve their tax exempt status.

” The needs assessment includes a joint implementation plan that incorporates shared goals to significantly target the social determinants of health in our city, and state, which serve as the tipping point for systemic change,” said Mayor President Sharon-Weston Broome. “Working together, we will continue to make our community a better place.”

HealthyBR convened a CHNA work group to identify the top 10 community health needs in the parish. The group consisted of representatives from Baton Rouge General Medical Center, Lane Regional Medical Center, Ochsner Health System, Our Lady of the Lake Regional Medical Center, Woman’s Hospital, Pennington Biomedical Research Center, Baton Rouge Area Chamber, Baton Rouge Health District, Louisiana Public Health Institute, East Baton Rouge Parish Library, and the HIV/AIDS Alliance for Region 2 (HAART).
Through this working process, the group identified the following as Access to Care, Cancer Prevention, Cardiovascular Disease & Stroke Prevention,  Diabetes Prevention,  Healthy Baby, Healthy Living, Injury Prevention, Mental Health,  Sexually Transmitted Infections/HIV and Substance Abuse.
The 2018 CHNA guides the work HealthyBR will be doing over the next three years. The implementation plan will continuously be updated to the HealthyBR website.
