Baton Rouge Tax Renewal: Time To VOTE!

On April 28th there will be an opportunity for you – the taxpayers of East Baton Rouge Parish – to voice your opinion in a crucial election.  There have been many conversations leading up to this vote and people all over the city seemed to be split on several issues as it relates to this plan.
On your ballot, you will find 3 propositions. Take a minute to read through each proposition, so that YOU can make an informed decision.

  1. Proposition 1 deals specifically with school facilities and technology. In this proposition, several schools are up for renovations and even the construction of new buildings. As proposed there is a list of named projects and those projects will receive priority if the tax is approved. The projects will happen in phases and some of those phases will not occur until 10 years from now. Alumni at McKinley High, for example, wanted McKinley to receive a complete rebuild, with this proposed plan McKinley will only receive “major renovation” and not a complete rebuild. The complete listing of projects can be found HERE.
  2. Proposition 2 deals specifically with alternative schooling, discipline, and truancy. This proposition makes up only 8 percent of the entire funding for the renewal. This proposition is slated to improve the educational environment for students in East Baton Rouge. The opposition to this proposition is concerned with the small percentage of funding allocated to a very important matter within our schools.
  3. Proposition 3 deals with teacher compensation. This proposition will sustain teacher pay.

SUMMARY: RENEWAL OF A 0.41% SALES AND USE TAX FOR 10 YEARS WITH THE PROCEEDS TO BE EXPENDED WITHIN THE DISTRICT FOR THE PURPOSE OF INCREASING COMPENSATION OF TEACHERS AND OTHER SCHOOL SYSTEM EMPLOYEES IN THE PUBLIC SCHOOL SYSTEM IN EAST BATON ROUGE PARISH?
