Do “professional Black men marry Black women”? According to a 2015 Pew Research study, 75 percent of recently married black men were married to black women. In other words, black men who marry black women are the norm. And — contrary to popular belief — that percentage was even higher for college-educated black men and those who earned more than $100,000 per year, according to some Howard University researchers who delved deeper into the statistics. Can Black couples be faithful to each other? According to a report by Institute for Family Studies, among black men, the rate is highest: 28% reported that they had sex with someone other than their spouse, compared with 20% of white men and 16% of Hispanic men. Regardless of the fact of who’s leading, reports show that a few bad apples are the most talked about, thus spoiling the bunch. There has to be a time to applaud the Black man that is making efforts to build his family and build a new legacy of life and love in society. Baton Rouge-based blogger Jay C. Williams notes ” knowing that fatherhood and building a family were two life goals I was firm on,” in a recent story written on Medium. In the post, he touches on the lack of great examples of love in the Black community, starting with his own family. “My fear, however, was that I had never gotten the chance to exist among long-term relationships or healthy marriages, so how was I to build something I’d never seen before?” says Williams. “Could I hope for a successful marriage when I didn’t know what it looked like?” Williams offers 3 tips that will support you if you find yourself in a situation where you’re wondering if you will ever be able to build a healthy relationship when you’ve never witnessed one: 1) find a therapist to ensure you’re putting in the work for the right person 2) keep that therapist so you know what work is personal work and what work is partnership work 3) understand that the only people who can answer this are you and your partner.
